The Science

Quercetin is one of the most widely distributed and extensively studied flavonoids in the plant kingdom, found naturally in apples, red onions, capers, berries, and green tea. What makes quercetin clinically interesting is not just its antioxidant activity, it is its multi-pathway mechanism of action across immune modulation, histamine regulation, and cellular protection.

Quercetin functions as a zinc ionophore, a molecule that facilitates the transport of zinc across cell membranes into the intracellular environment, where zinc inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and supports immune cell signalling. This zinc ionophore mechanism is one of quercetin's most clinically significant properties and explains why its combination with zinc at a meaningful dose produces effects that exceed those of either ingredient alone.

On histamine regulation, quercetin inhibits the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells and basophils, the immune cells responsible for triggering allergic reactions and hypersensitivity responses. This mast cell stabilising effect makes quercetin particularly relevant for individuals with seasonal allergies, environmental sensitivities, or histamine intolerance.

Oleuropein, derived from olive leaf, provides complementary antioxidant and antimicrobial activity through inhibition of NF-kB inflammatory signalling. Acerola-sourced vitamin C supports normal immune function and collagen synthesis, while also recycling oxidised quercetin back to its active reduced form, extending the duration of quercetin's antioxidant effects. Vitamin D3 at 12.5 micrograms per serving contributes to the maintenance of normal immune function, a well-established EU-permitted health claim. Zinc at 15mg supports normal immune function, DNA synthesis, and protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Why Quercetin is a Core Longevity Nutrient

Quercetin is one of the most researched plant flavonoids in existence, studied across thousands of papers for its effects on immune modulation, histamine regulation, antioxidant defence, cardiovascular health, and cellular protection. It is found naturally in a wide range of fruits and vegetables, but rarely in quantities sufficient to produce meaningful biological effects through diet alone. Supplementation at clinically relevant doses is required to achieve the intracellular concentrations associated with quercetin's documented benefits.

Our formula delivers quercetin at 500mg per serving, a dose that reflects the amounts used in clinical research, alongside a carefully chosen ensemble of synergistic nutrients. Acerola extract and vitamin C recycle quercetin back to its active form after it neutralises free radicals, extending its protective window. Oleuropein adds a complementary anti-inflammatory pathway through NF-kB inhibition. Zinc at 15mg is included specifically because quercetin's role as a zinc ionophore means it actively drives zinc into cells, and without meaningful zinc present, this mechanism cannot fully operate. Vitamin D3 completes the immune support picture.

This is the thinking behind every formulation in the Phenome+ range, each ingredient is present because the science supports its inclusion at that dose alongside the other ingredients, not because it makes the label look more impressive.

The Science Behind It

Quercetin acts as a potent antioxidant and immune-modulating compound, helping neutralise free radicals and supporting the body’s response to inflammation and histamine.

It has been studied for its potential effects on:

Histamine release and mast cell stability. Supporting those prone to seasonal or environmental sensitivity.

Oxidative stress reduction. Protecting cellular structures, lipids, and DNA from damage.

Immune system balance. Encouraging a more regulated, less over-reactive immune response.

By supporting pathways such as Nrf2 activation and modulating inflammatory signalling, Quercetin plays a key role in cellular resilience, vascular health, and long-term wellness.

Real People Real Stories

"I started taking Quercetin daily during allergy season and noticed a real difference, less congestion, better energy, and I feel more resilient overall. The fact that it includes zinc and vitamin D3 alongside the quercetin makes this feel like a properly thought-through formula rather than a basic quercetin capsule."
— Sarah T.
"I recommend quercetin to patients with histamine intolerance and seasonal allergies regularly. The inclusion of zinc at 15mg alongside the quercetin is genuinely important, most quercetin supplements miss this. The oleuropein addition also makes this stand out from what else is on the market."
— Dr. Priya M.
"I take this as part of my daily longevity stack alongside the NAD+ and Gly-NAC. Two months in and my seasonal allergies this spring have been significantly milder than usual. Hard to know exactly what to attribute it to but this is a keeper."
— James K.
"I was sceptical about paying more than the basic quercetin supplements but the ingredient list explains it. Six active ingredients, no fillers, proper doses. You can tell it has been formulated by people who understand the science. Will not be going back to a cheaper product."

About the Product

What is quercetin and what is it used for?

Quercetin is a plant-derived flavonoid found naturally in foods such as red onions, apples, capers, berries, and green tea. It is one of the most extensively studied plant compounds in nutritional science, with documented activity across immune modulation, histamine regulation, antioxidant defence, and cellular protection. In supplement form it is used for seasonal allergy support, everyday immune resilience, antioxidant protection, and as part of longevity-focused health protocols.

Why does this formula contain six ingredients rather than just quercetin?

Each ingredient is included because it enhances the effectiveness of the others at a mechanistic level. Vitamin C from acerola and L-ascorbic acid recycles quercetin back to its active antioxidant form after it neutralises free radicals, extending its protective window. Zinc is included because quercetin acts as a zinc ionophore, it facilitates zinc transport into cells, where zinc performs critical immune and antiviral functions. Without meaningful zinc present, this ionophore mechanism cannot fully operate. Oleuropein adds a complementary anti-inflammatory pathway. Vitamin D3 supports normal immune function through a distinct mechanism. The result is a formula where all six ingredients work together rather than six ingredients that happen to be in the same capsule.

What is a zinc ionophore and why does it matter?

A zinc ionophore is a molecule that facilitates the transport of zinc ions across cell membranes into the intracellular environment. Zinc inside cells can inhibit viral replication enzymes and support immune cell signalling, but zinc on its own has limited ability to cross cell membranes unaided. Quercetin acts as a natural zinc ionophore, it actively carries zinc across the membrane, enabling intracellular zinc concentrations that support immune and antiviral function significantly more effectively than zinc supplementation alone.

What is oleuropein and why is it included?

Oleuropein is a polyphenol derived from olive leaf, well studied for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits NF-kB, a key transcription factor that regulates the expression of pro-inflammatory genes, adding a complementary anti-inflammatory pathway to quercetin's mast cell stabilisation and antioxidant activity. At 150mg per serving it is included at a meaningful dose, not as a trace ingredient for label purposes.

Using the Product

How many capsules should I take and when?

The recommended serving is 2 capsules per day, taken with water preferably with a meal. Taking with food improves absorption and reduces the small chance of digestive discomfort. There is no strong evidence that time of day significantly affects quercetin's absorption, so morning or lunchtime with a meal is a practical approach.

How long does it take to notice any effects?

Quercetin's effects are cumulative rather than immediate. Most people taking a consistent daily dose notice changes in immune resilience and seasonal sensitivity within two to four weeks. For histamine-related benefits, studies suggest four to eight weeks of consistent supplementation produces the most meaningful results. The antioxidant and cellular protection effects operate continuously from the first dose but compound over time.

Can I take this alongside other Phenome+ supplements?

Yes. Quercetin Complex is designed to work as part of a broader supplement protocol. It pairs particularly well with Gly-NAC (which supports glutathione production for complementary antioxidant coverage) and with Broccoli Complex (which activates the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway through a distinct mechanism). Combined, these three products cover multiple antioxidant and immune pathways simultaneously.

Is it safe to take quercetin every day long term?

Quercetin has a well-established safety profile at doses up to 1,000mg per day in clinical research, with no significant adverse effects reported at the 500mg per serving dose used in this formula. Long-term daily use at this dose is considered safe for healthy adults. As with all supplements, if you are taking prescription medication or managing a health condition, consult your GP before beginning supplementation.

Safety and Suitability

Is this product suitable for vegans?

Yes. All six active ingredients, the capsule shell (vegetable cellulose), and all excipients are vegan-friendly. The product is also non-GMO and free from gluten, dairy, soy, and artificial additives.

Are there any known interactions with medications?

Quercetin may interact with certain medications. It can inhibit CYP3A4, an enzyme involved in metabolising a number of drugs, potentially affecting their plasma concentrations. It may also interact with blood-thinning medications, certain antibiotics, and immunosuppressants. If you are taking any prescription medication, consult your GP or pharmacist before use. This is a precautionary note rather than a contraindication, but it is important information for anyone on a regular medication regimen.

Is this suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

We recommend consulting a healthcare professional before taking any food supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While quercetin is a naturally occurring plant compound, the concentrated doses in supplement form exceed typical dietary intake levels, and its safety in pregnancy has not been fully established in clinical trials.

Does this product contain any allergens?

This product is free from all 14 major allergens listed under UK food labelling regulations, including gluten, dairy, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, mustard, celery, lupin, sulfur dioxide, and eggs. It is also non-GMO.

Ingredients and Formulation

Why is the vitamin C included alongside quercetin?

Vitamin C serves two roles in this formula. First, it supports normal immune function independently, a well-established EU-permitted health claim. Second, and more importantly for the formula's design, vitamin C regenerates quercetin after it has been oxidised through its antioxidant activity. When quercetin neutralises a free radical it becomes oxidised itself. Vitamin C donates an electron to restore quercetin to its active reduced form, effectively extending the duration of quercetin's protective activity. This is why both acerola extract (a natural vitamin C source rich in co-factors) and L-ascorbic acid are included.

Why is vitamin D3 included in an immune and quercetin formula?

Vitamin D3 at 12.5 micrograms per serving contributes to the maintenance of normal immune function, a permitted EU health claim supported by substantial clinical evidence. Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in the UK population due to limited year-round sunlight, and sub-optimal vitamin D status is associated with impaired immune response and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. Including vitamin D3 in this formula addresses a gap that affects many of the formula's target users.

What is the source of quercetin in this product?

Quercetin is derived from Sophora japonica, the Japanese pagoda tree, one of the richest natural plant sources of quercetin. This source is standard in premium quercetin supplements and provides a highly purified quercetin extract at consistent potency.

Does this product contain any fillers or binders?

No. The formula contains only the six active ingredients listed on the label and a vegetable cellulose capsule shell. There are no magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, microcrystalline cellulose used as a filler, titanium dioxide, or other manufacturing excipients commonly found in cheaper supplement products.
